What is the closest airport to Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater?
To reach Mount Bromo and Ijen Crater in one trip, you can’t rely on a single airport because the two locations are at opposite ends of the mountain. The closest airports are divided into two entrances:
- Ijen Crater Entrance (East End) Banyuwangi International Airport (BWX): This is the closest airport to Ijen. It’s approximately 1-1.5 hours by land from Paltuding (the Ijen climbing post).
- Mount Bromo Entrance (West End) Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport (MLG) in Malang: The closest airport for access to Bromo. It’s approximately 2-2.5 hours by land from the Bromo area. Juanda International Airport (SUB) in Surabaya:
This is the largest and most popular alternative, serving many flights. It’s approximately 3-3.5 hours by land from Bromo. Recommended Best Route (Cross-Country Trip): To save time, use the open-jaw system (arriving and departing from different airports). Fly to Surabaya (SUB) or Malang (MLG) to explore Bromo first. Then, continue your road trip (you can rent a car or take the train) east to Banyuwangi to climb Ijen, and fly home from Banyuwangi (BWX).
How far is it from Surabaya or Malang airport to Tumpak Sewu?
The trip from the nearest airport to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall takes approximately 2 hours from Malang or 3.5 hours from Surabaya. The route details and estimates are as follows:
From Malang (Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport): Distance Travel Time: 2 – 2.5 hours
Route: Via Dampit District to Pronojiwo (Lumajang). This is a popular route due to its shorter distance.
From Surabaya (Juanda International Airport): Distance Travel Time: 3.5 – 5 hours
Route: Usually via the Surabaya-Malang Toll Road and then continue via the southern route towards Dampit to Pronojiwo. To compare transportation options or view a live map of the route, you can check the Google Maps link for Tumpak Sewu.
How much is the price sharing tour and private ?
The price of a combined tour package (sharing/open trip) for Bromo, Ijen, and Tumpak Sewu usually ranges from IDR 2,000,000 to IDR 2,800,000 per person. For private tour packages (usually lasting 3 days 2 nights or 4 days 3 nights), the price range is influenced by the number of participants and the pick-up point (such as Surabaya, Malang, or Yogyakarta): 2 people: IDR 3,150,000 – IDR 4,500,000 per person. 3 people: IDR 2,500,000 – IDR 3,500,000 per person. 4 people: IDR 2,100,000 – IDR 2,800,000 per person. This package generally includes air-conditioned transportation, Bromo jeep, accommodation (homestay/hotel), tourist entrance tickets, local guide, and climbing permit.
What facilities do we get?
Purchasing a Bromo – Ijen – Tumpak Sewu tour package (usually 3 days 2 nights or 4 days 3 nights) simplifies your trip because all the essential amenities are taken care of by the agent. Generally, the facilities and services you receive include:
Transportation: Pick-up and drop-off (from an agreed-upon location, e.g., Surabaya, Malang, or Banyuwangi), air-conditioned vehicle during the tour, and Jeep Hardtop rental specifically for the Bromo area.
Accommodation: Stays around Bromo, the Ijen area (Banyuwangi/Bondowoso), and near Tumpak Sewu (Lumajang) according to the package you choose. Entrance Fee: All entrance fees for domestic tourists, including the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, Ijen Crater, and Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. Meals & Mineral Water: Meals (usually breakfast) and mineral water are included during the trip.
Tour Guide: A local guide who will guide you and ensure your safety, especially during the trek to Tumpak Sewu and down the Ijen Crater. Gas Mask: A special respiratory protective mask standard for climbing Ijen Crater.
Documentation: Usually includes photo and video services from the guide or photographer provided (including editing).
What’s Usually Not Included: Transportation costs from your origin to the meeting/pickup point. Personal expenses (souvenirs, lunch and dinner outside the facility, or snacks).
Optional Expenses: Horse rental in Bromo or local motorcycle taxis in Tumpak Sewu
is the package available every day?
Yes, shared (joint/open trip) and private packages to Mount Bromo are generally available daily.
Since you’re located in Probolinggo, you have very close access to the Bromo area (usually through the Cemoro Lawang/Sukapura entrance). Here’s a brief summary of the differences:
- Shared Package (Open Trip) Availability: Generally available daily, but some travel agents offer daily departures, while others offer daily joint quotas, especially during weekends or holiday seasons. Characteristics: You’ll be grouped with other travelers in a car/jeep and group.
Advantages: Much more economical due to the shared fare system, and suitable for traveling alone or with a single partner.
- Private Trip Package Availability: Available daily with no minimum quota requirement. Characteristics: More exclusive. The vehicle (car from the meeting point and jeep at Bromo) is occupied entirely by your group.
Advantages: More flexible time, more customizable routes, and greater privacy. Tips for you: Because the availability of daily open trips is highly dependent on quotas from local agents, it is recommended to always contact the nearest travel agent or jeep service provider in the Bromo/Probolinggo area in advance. You can check the schedule details or book directly through the local official tourist information service.
